THE MÖVE STORY: AN EVENTFUL HISTORY
The Möve brand has a long and eventful history. From 1897 – 1947, Möve was the high-quality bicycle brand of the company Walter & Co. GmbH, popular throughout Germany. Together with Mifa, IFA and Diamant, Möve was one of the oldest bicycle brands in Germany. After the division into East and West Germany, Möve bicycles were manufactured from 1948 – 1961 by the VEB Möve factory in Mühlhausen/Thuringia. After this the bicycle brand lied dormant due to a decision of the GDR government at that time, which wanted to limit itself to just three bicycle brands. The Möve bicycle production was transferred to Mifa in Sangerhausen and the 5,000 employees at the site in Mühlhausen then dedicated themselves to vehicle seat production for the Wartburg from Eisenach.
In 1989, the grandfather of Tobias Spröte, one of the founders of the later Möve Bikes GmbH, acquired part of the VEB Möve factory and founded Möve Metall GmbH. From this time on, automation systems were produced here for the vehicle seat industry. At this company Tobias Spröte completed his studies to be a development engineer and got to know the eventful history of the Möve bicycles brand in his spare time.
AT MÖVEN WE LOVE BICYCLES
THE MÖVE STORY: A NEW START WITH AN INNOVATION/ A NEW CHAPTER WITH CYFLY
In 2011, Tobias Spröte acquired the brand rights of the historical cycle brand and, as an enthusiastic cyclist, started to develop his first concept ideas.
In 2012 the later founder met an inventor who told him of a concept for a bicycle drive. Together with his friends Marcus Rochlitzer and Dominik Burre, he tested the concept in the Ingenieurbüro Möve equipment & design GmbH, which he had already founded in 2011.
After a short while, the three friends and the inventor agreed to develop the first prototype. The development and prototype production first went haltingly, because the daily business made continuous work impossible. At Christmas 2013 the time came. The first prototype of the cyfly drive saw the light of day. After detailed tests, the three decided to found a new company and to restart the brand Möve with the innovation cyfly. After searching for investors for just under a year, Möve Bikes GmbH was founded in November 2014.
After a development period of three years before market maturity, the cyfly drive, as a core element of Möve bicycles and e-bike, opened up a new chapter in the history of the Möve brand.
A STRONG TEAM
Managing Director & Founder
THE DEDICATED ENGINEER & CYCLIST
Tobias already came into contact with the technology for e-bikes in 2008. In his role as the marketing manager of a southern German engineering agency at that time, he was occupied with the project care of the housing development for bicycle accumulators. The former customer is now the biggest German eBike drive manufacturer.
At around the same time, Tobias got to know the eventful history of the old brand Möve Bikes and acquired the naming rights to the traditional brand in 2011. Already in the following year he had made his decision to combine the new e-bike drive technology with the revival of the brand Möve Bikes.
The idea was gratefully accepted by the local press and a dedicated gear unit inventor got wind of it from them.
He presented the concept of his muscle-powered bicycle drive to Tobias who took up the concept and agreed with the inventor to translate the concept to the product.
The development of the cyfly drive already started in 2012. In 2013, Tobias combined his hobby of cycling with the testing of the first prototype of the cyfly drive. Since then he has been an enthusiastic "cyflyer" and successfully united his hobby with his occupation.
THE DEVELOPER WITH ATTENTION TO DETAIL
After his studies, which he completed together with Tobias, Marcus started his work at the Stuttgart company Mahle. There, in the following years, he developed components for engins. His attention to detail and his ability to steer complex development projects quickly helped him to rise in his profession.
At this time he was in regular contact with Tobias, who in 2012 offered him a position in his engineering office. In 2013 Marcus decided to take up the position as development manager at Tobias’ engineering office.
Marcus quickly came to love the project Möve cyfly and contributed his special knowledge from the fields of serial production and project management.
Because of his personal enthusiasm for the project, Marcus decided in 2014 to become the founder of Möve Bikes GmbH. From then on he was responsible for the series development and quality assurance of the production processes and expanded his knowledge in the field of sales and marketing in the context of the German Silicon Valley Accelerator, in which he participated for Möve Bikes in 2016.
